Klein Karoo Wine Route Wineries.
The Klein Karoo Wine region produces a significant percentage of South African Wines and
is a premier South African Wine Region. Arguably, the longest and most diverse wine route
in South Africa, the Klein Karoo Wine Route stretches along the Route 62 from
Cogmanskloof outside Montagu in the west to the Langkloof in the east. The climate is
generally drier than that of other regions, resulting in healthy vineyards that are grown
organically to a large extent. The various microclimates enable the production of a wide
variety of wines including the country’s favourite dessert wine, Muscadel, world-class
Port and pot-still brandies.
First stop along the route is Montagu. The cellars here harvest their grapes in the
beautiful and fertile Koo-valley and in the valleys along the R62. Montagu Wine Cellar
and, Montagu Wine & Spirits Co produce well-rounded, sociable wines and are known for
their Muscadel. Heading onto Barrydale, simply follow the curves of the mountain along
the R62 towards Joubert-Tradauw Private Cellar. Do taste their Shiraz or have a glass of
Chardonnay and a lovely cheese platter under the vines. The Barrydale Cellar produces
world-class brandies and is home to the Joseph Barry Potstill range.
In Ladismith, visit the tasting room of Ladismith Cellar, the biggest distillery in the
region. Next along the route is Calitzdorp, the source of the country’s finest Port
wines. Nowhere else is the authentic character of the Klein Karoo community better
preserved than in this region. Boplaas Family Vineyards, Calitzdorp Wine Cellar and De
Krans Wine Cellar are renowned for its world class Port and dry red blends consisting of
traditional Port cultivars like Touriga Nacional. The smallest member, Peter Bayly Wines
produces just one wine, also a Reserve Port. Four more private producers have recently
opened their doors, namely Axe Hill – known for their White Port, Withoek, Du’SwaRoo and
TTT Cellars.
Enjoy the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of Oudtshoorn and take some time out to explore
the region. Grundheim Wines lies just outside the town and is renowned for it’s
‘witblits’ made in a traditional brandy-still and liqueurs. Kango Wine House in town
stock a range of wines from different cellars in the region, including the Muscadel from
Excelsior Vlakteplaas. Karusa Vineyards lies in the Schoemanshoek Valley and is a
producer of Cap Classique, the only in the Klein Karoo.
Following the trail over the Swartberg Mountains, Bergrivier Vineyards is situated 20 km
to the east of Prince Albert and specialise in red wines. Travelling on through
Meiringspoort, De Rust and back to Oudtshoorn, stop to visit Domein Doornkraal who has a
philosophy in that people should have an easy intimate relationship with wine and this is
carried through in the making of their wine and the sometimes unusual blends that follow.
Accessed via the scenic Montagu Pass near George, lies Herold Wines. The wines hold great
promise for a region yet to be fully discovered and potentially well suited to the
production of fine South African wines.
This makes the Klein Karoo Wine Route the most eastern wine route in the country. Come,
visit the soul of the R62, and drink a toast to their variety!
