Originally called “Agter Cogmans Kloof”, Montagu was named after the British Colonial Secretary of the Cape Colony, John Montagu, in 1851.
Montagu has become renowned for its wonderful year round climate and Hot Mineral Springs. Surrounded by the Langeberg range of mountains the area produces fruits such as apricots, peaches, apples, pears and is developing its citrus orchards. Vineyards abound and red and white muscadel is considered to be the area’s speciality. However new cultivars are now producing grapes for Merlot and Chardonnay blended wines.
The town boasts over thirty National Monument houses, two of which are utilised by the Museum society. Many of the gardens in the centre of town still have small apricot orchards, which give a wonderful display in spring. Gardens also abound with rose bushes which would flower all year round if left to do so.

John Montagu Guest House, Montagu

Experience tranquil Victorian living at this beautifully restored home located in the fruit and wine bowl at the start of the Klein Karoo. Montagu is surrounded by the magnificent panorama of the Langeberg and is world famous for its healing hot mineral springs, historic buildings, exquisite mountain scenery, tractor rides to the summit of the Langeberg mountains, hiking trails and muscadel wines.

Accommodation: John Montagu Guest House offers five beautifully furnished en-suite bedrooms each uniquely decorated in a Victorian style. Activities: The following are available in and around the town: golf, squash, bowls, tennis, horse riding, hiking trails, shooting range, bird watching, rock climbing, mountain tractor ride (1550m), hot spring pools, cold pools, mountain bike and 4X4 trails and fishing to name but a few. The Nature Garden is a must for lovers of indigenous plants. Informative guide maps for the trails, historic houses and Kanonkop Hill are available from the Tourist Bureau. Enjoy visiting museums, one specializes in herbs, the other in the history of the town. Many artists and craft workers have chosen to settle in Montagu and their work is on view at various venues.
Directions: To get to John Montagu Guest House from Cape Town, take N1 to Worcester. From Worcester follow the R60 to Robertson then onto the Klein Karoo’s famous R62 from Ashton to Montagu. When you enter Montagu from Cape Town, turn 4th left into Kohler, or from Barrydale, turn 4th right into Kohler, then 3rd right into Joubert, number 30.

M’s on Route 62, Barrydale

Spend some time in a Klein Karoo eco-friendly building made out of mud and stone where you can shop and eat good food.

M’s on Route 62 is definitely worth a visit where you will be made to feel very welcome by Martina and Klaus Stöcker. Experience the garden café with mountain view or cosy fire place which their restaurant offers along with some adventurous and interesting dishes on the menu – Goat’s cheese with grappa, nuts and chocolate! M’s boutique has sourced items from around the world to include outfits to lift your spirits, jewellery, accessories and more. You won’t leave without finding something that you feel good about.
There is a selection of Arican art and crafts which includes ceramics, basketwork, leatherwork and pottery made by underprivileged people in South Africa.
Directions: To get to M’s on Route 62 from Cape Town, follow the R62 to Barrydale and you will see the “Mud” building on the left.

Tradouw Guesthouse, Barrydale

A hidden gem in the Klein Karoo off the R62, filled with character and charm from a bygone era.

Tradouw Guesthouse is a quaint, quiet, peaceful and rustic guesthouse with large gardens. Once the General Dealer Store the building dates back to the late 1800′s, situated in the main street of Barrydale just past the large Dutch Reformed Church.

Den Vlier Private Game Reserve, Ladismith

Den Vlier Farm was bought in 2007 and transformation into a prestige Private Game Reserve started in 2008. They have further invested in the conservation of wildlife and today the reserve boasts a variety of game including Zebra, Gemsbok, Springbok, Mountain Reedbuck, Duikers, Eagles, Owls etc.
The elusive Cape Mountain Leopard has also been spotted roaming in this unspoilt Klein Karoo wilderness area.

Den Vlier Game Farm is a truly unique Klein Karoo surprise. Situated 17km outside Ladismith on the world famous Route 62, it offers secluded private campsites in a Klein Karoo nature setting surrounded by the Klein Swartberg Mountains and the majestic Towerkop.
Accommodation: The campsite can take up to 6 tents or 4 caravans with shower, scullery, flush toilet, continuous supply of hot water and lighting. There is a protected braai area for those long Karoo nights under the stars next to a campfire. Tents can be placed under the shade of the lovely Wild Plum and Karee trees.
Meals can be provided, on request, firewood and fresh home baked bread can be arranged if you let them know in advance.
Activities: A variety of hiking and mountain bike trails, Quad and 4×4 trails with amazing views, game viewing, stargazing, interesting fauna and flora all in a safe environment. There are also wonderful 4×4 routes, mountain bike and hiking trails as well as scenic drives in the surrounding area.
Directions: From Cape Town on the R62 toward Montagu, Barrydale and Ladismith, 65Km from Barrydale turn left off R62 onto tar road towards Laingsburg. This road will lead to a T–Junction (11km), turn left, Den Vlier Private Game Reserve is another 1km on your right.

Camping at Den Vlier offers guests an inexpensive way to explore this magnificent Klein Karoo area, a perfect family holiday destination.
