Route 62 to the Klein (Small) Karoo - Montagu to Oudtshoorn

Come get your kicks on Route 62 to the Klein (Small) Karoo, a great alternative to the busy national routes
The R62 is the main route into the Klein (small) Karoo and links the town of Worcester on the N1 to Oudtshoorn which is the hub city of the Klein Karoo or Little Karoo. Turn off from the N1 at Worcester and follow the signs to Robertson. As you emerge from the Du Toits Kloof Tunnel you are immediately enveloped by a spectacular mountain drive as the road snakes through the inland side of the Hottentots Holland Mountains towards Worcester. You soon will be driving through what seems like endless vineyards as you enter the Worcester Wine region. The R62 starts as you leave Worcester for Robertson and is one of South Africa’s most popular drives known as Route 62. It is the gateway to the Klein Karoo and the many cultural, historic and contemporary activities which takes place on farms and towns in this region. Notice the travellers on Harley’s, bicycles, trucks and 4×4 off-road vehicles. It’s an exciting road to travel starting at Robertson.

The Klein Karoo Wine Route

WINERIES TO VISIT IN THE KLEIN KAROO ALONG ROUTE 62
The Klein Karoo wine region is situated between spectacular mountain ranges, stretching along the Cape Route 62 from Montagu in the west to the Langkloof in the east, and its vines are mostly grown in the fertile alluvial soil along the river banks.
Various microclimates enable Klein Karoo winemakers to produce a wide variety of quality wines, including dry wines, fortified wines and brandies.
World class port and South Africa's champion muscadel are produced here, along with an extensive range of dessert wines.
Members of the Klein Karoo Wine Route produce a host of outstanding red and white wines, which vary from full-bodied cabernets to lighter wines for easy drinking.

Originally called “Agter Cogmans Kloof”, Montagu was named after the British Colonial Secretary of the Cape Colony, John Montagu, in 1851.
Montagu has become renowned for its wonderful year round climate and Hot Mineral Springs. Surrounded by the Langeberg range of mountains the area produces fruits such as apricots, peaches, apples, pears and is developing its citrus orchards. Vineyards abound and red and white muscadel is considered to be the area’s speciality. However new cultivars are now producing grapes for Merlot and Chardonnay blended wines.
The town boasts over thirty National Monument houses, two of which are utilised by the Museum society. Many of the gardens in the centre of town still have small apricot orchards, which give a wonderful display in spring. Gardens also abound with rose bushes which would flower all year round if left to do so.
