Conservation in the Karoo to save the riverine rabbit from certain extinction is well on track.
The riverine rabbit (Bunolagus monticularis) is the most endangered mammal in South Africa and due to extensive degradation of it’s habitat from farming, the riverine rabbit is now poised to either make a remarkable comeback or slide off the list into extinction.
The Endangered Wildlife Trust now manages a Riverine Rabbit Rehabilitation Program with the farmers of the Central Karoo Region. The project is underway and the fate of the riverine rabbit now hangs in the balance.
